April 2015
In December 2014, in a premium Digital Fuel Monitor research note titled “Mobile consolidation on Denmark’s doorstep” (
link) we took a close look at the Danish mobile market ahead of the planned merger of Telenor (no.2) and TeliaSonera (no.3). On the 8th of April 2015 the European Commission opened an in-depth investigation into the proposed merger.
Digital Fuel Monitor documented the Danish smartphone mobile internet access prices for the first time in January 2014 (Rewheel has been monitoring Danish prices since December 2012). During the course of 2014, while the merger was in the making and after December 2014 that the merger was publicly announced the four Danish mobile operators launched new tariff plans and made adjustments to their existing plans both in their main and discount brands.
- The lowest price of the mid range and high usage gigabyte baskets increased between 9% and 55%
- The average price of the mid range gigabyte baskets was flat while the average price of the high usage gigabyte baskets increased between 2% and 21%
- While in the Swedish 4 operator competitive market gigabyte allowances doubled for same prices (40, 50 and 100 gigabyte smartphone plans are now available and on some Swedish networks 30% of the residential smartphone customers are now on the 20, 50 or 100 gigabyte plans) in Denmark two operators started moving in the opposite direction
